Things to Consider
What do you want powered?
Before anything else, it is ideal to make your wish list of items you want powered. This will determine what size of generator you will need to get the job done. This can range a handful of items like a fridge, sump pump, and furnace to powering your whole home.

Size
The size of the generator you need will be determined by what you want to power. The RUNNING watts of your generator tells you how much power you have. Generators can range from a few hundred running watts to tens of thousands of running watts. A proper design will find a balance in value of a unit without over sizing or over taxing your generator. An average entry level generator will be approximately 3000-4000 running watts whereas a whole home can range from 12KW-24KW.
Portable vs
Stationary
Size can determine if a generator is portable or stationary. But usually this will be determined if you have a whole home or small back up system. Portable generators require you to bring them into position, connect, start, and transfer manually where as a stationary system will usually start and transfer automatically. Stationary units will usually use the gas supply feeding your home where as a portable unit will usually require you to fill it every few hours.
Maintenance
Maintenance is important to keep in mind. Generators, like your car, require maintenance. Oil changes, filter cleaning/replacement, ignition, battery, and other systems must be in working condition to keep your generator ready to perform when you need it. Consider what you must do to keep your generator working or look into service plans.
