Dimmers - Mood, Magic, and Mayhem

Dimmers are one of those must haves in any home. Energy savings, functionality, ambiance, and in the past decade, automation are the big reasons any one wants a dimmer for their lighting system. Considered one of the easiest DIY quick improvements to a home, it is also one of the most common reasons I have been called to fix lighting issues. With the introduction of low voltage, compact fluorescent, LED, and dimmable commercial fixtures, dimmer technology has been forced to keep up with technological advancements.

Dimmer compatibility has become an important, yet over looked, aspect in designing and improving a home’s lighting system. Issues caused by installing an improperly matched dimmer can range from minor issues like flickering lights or lights that suddenly cut out before reaching minimum dimming levels to more severe problems like dimmer, bulb, or fixture damage and in some cases fire due to overheating. Lighting type, a lamp’s ability and range of dimming, wattage, conductor type, box fill, number of switching locations, and number of lighting control devices in a box all must be considered when selecting and installing a dimmer.
